All Natural Hair Mask; using Lavender Essential Oil

Coconut oil hair mask

Yup. This all natural hair mask for dry hair worked! I have tried coconut oil hair masks for moisture before, but this natural hair mask is a new recipe using coconut oil, honey, apple cider vinegar and lavender essential oil.

Please see the links at the very bottom of this article to see where YOU can purchase your ingredients for this awesome DIY project!

Let me break this DIY hair mask recipe down for you:

There are 4 main ingredients including LAVENDER essential oil:

  1. Coconut Oil
  2. Natural Honey
  3. Apple Cider vinegar
  4. Lavender Essential Oil

That’s it. And I bet you have it all sitting in your kitchen cupboards or pantry 😉

Here’s the formula:

  1.  2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
  2.  1 Tablespoon of Honey
  3.  1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
  4.  10 drops of Lavender essential oil.

I know what you’re thinking… Apple Cider Vinegar??? Is that going to burn my hair off? At least that’s what I questioned. AND I’m happy to report that no, it does not burn your hair off! In fact, my hair has never felt better after using this hair mask. The apple cider vinegar actually cleans off the impurities in your hair allowing the honey and coconut oil to be absorbed by the hair.

Let’s chat process…

Combine the three main ingredients (coconut oil, honey and apple cider vinegar) into a glass bowl. Place the glass bowl in warm water to warm up the ingredients so they all blend together and stir well. When it’s all melted together, add the Lavender essential oil just before you start painting it (yes painting) into your hair.

You’ve got the hair mask ready to go, grab a pastry basting brush (like I said you’re going to be painting) and head to a surface you can make a mess of! I used our bathroom because if all else fails, I can hose it down lol!

OK, here we go!

Begin at the scalp and take two inch chunks of hair and paint the hair mask to the base of the hair onto your scalp. It is harder than it sounds btw and there is no wrong way of doing this! Just get it so that the base of the hair and scalp is covered in the mask and then I lightly massage it in with my fingertips. From there, you can either carefully brush the mask into the longer parts of the hair OR just with your finger put the rest of the mask into your hair. I brushed it in, very CAREFULLY as I have very fine and long hair. I say carefull or you will get big knots! At the end when all the hair is covered, I soak the tips in the bowl. Yup, it’s a messy process but oh so worth it!

When the masking is done, put your hair in a bun, or if you have shorter hair, put it in a shower cap. You can also put a shower cap on after you have your hair in a bun to seal it all up. I don’t I like to air it out, it feels really good!

This mask needs to set for about 20-30 minutes. I go the full 30 because my hair is generally very dry. Then, after the time is up, go have a shower!

For best results, use a NATURAL shampoo! I also condition it, some don’t feel the need to, but I do. Then I towel dry my hair and let it air dry! I avoid using  the hair dryer like the plague! I only use it in the winter time and only when I’m in a hurry.

I gotta say, this hair mask is a winner and will be my new favorite for a once a week moisturizing natural hair mask!

  1. Awesome! So healthy and inspiring. It’s very important for us to take up these natural products as our body/hair and its tissues require them for the proper nutrients and organic compounds. Essential oils are the way to go!

I can’t wait to try this hair mask! I don’t take good enough care of my hair and blow dry my hair every time I shower..I know it’s not good but otherwise my hair looks funny air drying because that’s when I style it. Does your hair feel a lot smoother after you use this mask? Does it feel healthier?

    • Hello Kelli! My hair felt so great… Light, smooth and had some volume which is huge for me considering I have very fine hair that likes to lay flat lol! And yes, it most definitely feels healthier… Enjoy and give it a try, let me know what you think!

Nice. I just bought a hair mask and I cringed paying over 20$ for it. Except for the Lavender, I have all the other ingredients in my pantry. I color and highlight my hair blonde and I’m wondering if the Apple Cider Vinegar will strip the color from my hair? I see in your pictures that you are blonde. What is your experience?

    • Hello Vanessa! Great question, I had to dig into whether or not apple cider vinegar will strip hair color. My hair is natural, I do not dye it so I did some research for you. According to what I found, it will not strip the hair color. That being said, don’t overdo a hair mask of any kind. Once a week is plenty (which is what I do with or without the vinegar). If in the event you are unsure about the vinegar, just omit it from he ingredients and add a little extra coconut oil 🙂 enjoy this DIY recipe and look for more to come! Take Care…

  4. Yes! I make this exact recipe when I do my hair masks!! That is such a coincidence! Lavender is so good for the hair, not to mention it smells incredible!!! My head never feels cleaner than after I’ve done a mask like this! I also like to use Rosemary essential oil in my hair masks. Great post!

    Best wishes,
    Heather Montgomery

    • Hello Heather! So cool that you’ve used this recipe! It is my new favorite 🙂 I had never even though of using the apple cider in the hair before. Then one day I was reading about the health benefits of Apple Cider vinegar where using it in the hair was mentioned, so I though why not give it a try?!?!? And now I am hooked! I have heard of rosemary essential oil being used in hair masks and intend to try that as well, thanks for the tip, keep in touch! Take Care…
